I looked at those photos Theo posted and so I've started looking for fluorescent lighting, seeing as those could actually hold up a structure, due to rigidity etc. I've done some searching on the internet, which hasn't yielded much except for a general idea of pricing. So instead either tomorrow or after uni on Monday I'll go to Bunnings and some lighting shops and see what's available. If it's cheap enough and worthwhile me getting then I'll get some so we can play around with them, make sure they can support themselves and we can wire them up without zapping ourselves and so on. I'll also ask about connectivity and power supply because these are apparently rather difficult, so I'll check it out and get back to you all on Tuesday by the latest.
So I guess I'll be able to find out if fluorescent is what we want, not LED. I'll ask about and try and get my hands on some LED lights too though, so we can have a look. However, I'm still vague on pricing, depending on whether they are sold in bulk or not, length, diameter and wattage. But from what I've seen, if you take the price for the bulk (eg 25 lights) and divide by the number of lights you get, it's about $3 per light. The most expensive I've found is $10 per light, so this shouldn't break the bank unless we win the competition (dw I have no doubt in our ability) in which case we may need sponsorship.
