Wow its great to see the blog really moving along!
I think these joint solutions are not going to work for our structure:
Wrapping the steel cable around the compression element (like the rubber bands/skewers method)
Having a slit at the end
Drilling holes towards the end of the compression element for the tension cable to thread through
Eyelet screw at the end of the compression element
Tension cable welded to the sides of the compression element (would need to be welded professionally to ensure safety standards = $$)
I don’t think any of the above mentioned joints would meet BCA requirements moreover they would prove difficult to setup on our large scale pavilion. We’re not going to win if the judges think there's a possibility the tension cables will snap loose at Customs House, might take someone’s eye out :( The above mentioned joints also all require the tension cable to ‘bend’ around the joint and I think it would be a better structural solution to have individual tension cables (ie not one long continuous cable). The joints in Theo’s post are fantastic because the cables shoot off in different directions from the anchor point. I wonder if they were custom made for the project/what type of joint that’s called. Theo where is that image from/what’s the name of the project? I might do some sleuthing to find a supplier.
OT I like the aesthetics of an almost transparent/ v. thin tension cable because it works well with the lighting, making the rods look like they’re floating in air, and if they were pulsating I think it would be a dramatic effect.
Re tue meeting 2pm. I know we're all super busy with assessments atm and I think to be happy we need to use this massive block of time really constructively.
Christen - are the arch studios avail at this time for us to use and if not, is there an alternative place for us to work? Are you able to draw up a list of goals that we need to have achieved by the end of tue's session? Can we have a detailed list of all supplies/quantities and tools needed for tue so that everyone has stuff to work with?
Felicity :)
